Natural medications for insomnia will work if given the chance
Everyone has a sleepless night now and then and to most people it’s just an inconvenience. However if you find yourself in a cycle of struggling to go to sleep night after night, you may have chronic insomnia and natural medications for insomnia can definitely help. If you’ve tried all the suggestions on what not to eat or drink and are keeping your bedroom cool and dark, then your lack of sleep may be due to a health problem, so check this out with your GP before proceeding.
But if your insomnia itself is the problem, there are several natural remedies that you can employ to assure yourself a good night’s sleep night after night. And the good thing about these natural insomnia remedies is that there are minimal side effects. You’re not going to become chemically dependent. Some natural medications for insomnia are safe to take for the long term.
People sometime give up on natural sleep remedies because they expect them to work instantly. Most of them can take some time before they have an effect, but this doesn’t make them any less potent. Valerian, for instance, has been used for 5,000 years to relieve insomnia. It works. It doesn’t work quickly, though. You usually must take Valerian for up to three weeks before you begin to get those all elusive good nights of rest.
In Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy, Valerian is sold over the counter as a sleep medication. You do however, need to tell your doctor that you are using Valerian. Valerian should not be taken with any drug that suppresses the central nervous system, like antihistamines and chemical sedatives. To do so is very risky.
Melatonin is another herb that is very effective in treating insomnia. Melatonin occurs naturally in the human body, and it’s been used for years to help those with jet lag or those who are shift workers balance their sleep/wake cycle. Typically older people seem to benefit most from melatonin, as levels naturally decline with age. However some younger people swear by it so it’s certainly worth a try.
And let’s not forget essential oils. Essential oils have been applied to human skin for a variety of reasons over the centuries. The essential oil, lavender, is especially effective in inducing relaxation and thus, sleep. There are even baby bath products that contain lavender. If it helps babies relax, it will likely help you too.
So be patient with natural medications for insomnia and don’t expect instant results, they are not a chemical drug so may take longer to work, but work they will. There are also herbal blends that will work a bit faster, so if you need something that’s powerful, but still natural, have a look at the natural sleep remedies on our page.
Relaxation techniques, meditation, and yoga can also used as ways to help if you have a sleep problem and you are uncomfortable taking even natural medications for insomnia.
