If your circadian rhythm (body clock) is out of balance, sleep problems can occur. This usually affects shift workers or those temporarily experiencing jet lag, but can also happen when people keep irregular bedtimes. Even more important is to get up at the same time every morning, whatever you’ve been doing the night before!
Hi Wendy
For the last couple of months, my son (25) has been waking up after 5 hours every night. Then just contInues at short intervals the rest of the night. He is exhausted. Do you have any ideas he can try?
Hi
It sounds as if your son is experiencing stress which is interrupting his sleep, or his circadian rhythm is out of balance. Both these situations can improve if he can get outside and do some exercise early in the mornings. This will re balance the body clock as well as bring a natural stress relief.
It works best If you live In a sunny climate as sunlight reduces melatonin in the body. This then increases until it’s time for bed so the natural cycle is restored.
Make sure he is following good sleep hygiene such as no coffee during the afternoon/evening and having a dark cool place to sleep. Tell him to try not to focus on getting to sleep. But concentrate on other things. A good sleep CD may help with this.
I hope this helps!
Wendy
