Is There a Connection Between Headaches & Sleep Disorders?

Is there a connection between sleep problems and headaches? Your sleep position and sleep habits could be causing your headaches.

Sleeping on your stomach cause lead to a headache because your head is twisted around in order to breathe. Straining the muscles in your neck can limit the circulation to the head. Sleeping on your side or back is a better option with the head slightly elevated.

Sleeping late on a weekend may be the only time you have to catch up on sleep but this can aggravate or even cause headaches especially if you’re prone to them. Sleeping in can also disrupt your natural sleep/wake cycle and make it hard to fall asleep at night.

It’s well known that not enough sleep can cause a headache, but sleeping too much can also be a cause. It’s commonly believed that sleep can relieve a headache but napping during the day can lead to problems sleeping at night. If your headache is caused by slumping for too long in front of a computer screen for example, a nap is probably not the answer. Rather than take a nap. A better idea would be to do some exercise, proferably out of doors to increase circulation.

A tip for computer users – make sure your screen is properly aligned and that your chair is comfortable and supports your back.

In conclusion, try to keep active during the day and exercise each day if possible. A brisk walk is good enough. Get up at the same time every morning and go to bed at the same time each night. Night time should be for sleeping. It’s as simple as that.
