Menopause Insomnia? A Readers Question
By administrator | April 24, 2009
Hi Wendy, I am a 44 year old woman and I just found your website. I have been a 8~9 hour sleeper most of my life, so I am still with a feeling of disbelief with this insomnia that started all of sudden about a month ago. And, it hit it hard. Since then I sleep average 2~3 hours (sometimes 1 ~ 1.5 hours) a night. I started taking melatonin (3 mg), 5 HTP, or a complex formula of both 30mg or 5 HTP and 3 mg Melatonin, a momeopathic sleep pill called”Neurexan”, and some herbal remedy…Nothing seems to work..and I really feel like to cry.
People say Melatonin helps but why isn’t it working for me? And all the other remedy I’ve tried. Is there anything else I am missing?
… I just wonder if insomnia usually start all of sudden like this. (been sleeping 8~9 hours and 2~3 hours (or none) in couple weeks.) Especially, I have been doing just fine these days without any particular or serious concern/worries that I can think of.
If this is related to pre-menopausal phase, is it possible to get insomnia only without having it accompanied by other menopausal symptoms? I usually fall sleep and wake up in 2 hours and unable to sleep until I can catch another 1 or 2 hour sleep after 4~5 hours. However, it is getting worse, and I haven’t been able to sleep at all tonight.(even though I took 3mg Melatonin and 30 mg 5 HTP before I went to bed…) Any comment of yours will help. I already appreciate your effort to help people. Sincerely, Kellie (Vancouver, Canada)
Hi Kellie
I’ve read your letter twice and the only thing I can think of is that your insomnia may be a pre-menopausal symptom. It’s very unusual for insomnia to strike so suddenly, unless there is some kind of chronic stress happening at the same time and you say that this is not the case.
Bear in mind that stress can be hidden, so if you can think of anything that has recently happened that could cause stress (even though you’re not aware of it), maybe this is having an effect as well.
If you’re certain this is not the case, and there’s no physical reason either, I would look at a natural menopause treatment and get started on that. It may take a bit of experimentation to find one that suit and also remember that natural treatments don’t always work right away – they may take some time.
Stop the Melatonin if this isn’t working. It will only work if your body is not producing enough. At 44 you’re probably still ok for this. Ditto with the HTP (unless you are taking this for other reasons)
I would practice relaxation exercises even though you don’t feel stressed. It’s a good thing for everyone to do in this day & age. Spend some time before bed winding down, this also helps us prepare for sleep. Also have your self checked out by your doctor for any other health problems which may be lurking.
