    Five Leading Causes of Insomnia in Adults

    Insomnia is a formidable but manageable sleep disorder. This disorder is manifested by the person’s lack of sleep, interrupted sleep, irritability when awake and lack of mental aptitude when awake. There are many different causes of insomnia in adults. Causes of insomnia in adults and children are not necessarily the same. The differences between adult and child causes of sleep insomnia are in the variety and degree of the causes.

    Age And Melatonin

    Age and melatonin are two of the top causes of insomnia in adults. These are concurrent because the amount of melatonin in the body changes with age. The body uses melatonin to encourage sleep. These lead the causes of insomnia in adults because as age increases melatonin production decreases. The result is that older people have more difficulty getting to sleep and staying asleep.

    Hormones

    Other causes of insomnia in adults include hormones. The effect of changing hormones in women can cause some lack of sleep or interfere with a woman trying to sleep. Many bodily systems and functions are controlled by hormones. Bodily changes like the menstrual period can cause hormonal imbalance. This is one cause of insomnia in adults unique to women. Men can also undergo experiences similar to hormonal imbalance.

    Stress

    Stress is most likely number one in the list of causes of insomnia in adults. Insomniacs experience stress throughout the day. Both work and personal lives can be stressful and cause insomnia in adults. Depression, anxiety, and worrying caused by stress can torment a person and cause them to lose sleep. Stress come sin many forms like a change in the environment, moving to a new house, changing one’s shift in work, or dealing with a petulant child.

    Pain Or Discomfort

    Causes of insomnia in adults and in children include pain and feeling uncomfortable. Injuries or an underlying condition such as sleep apnea can ultimately affect the amount of sleep one gets and the quality of sleep as well.
